Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have released a study connecting red meat to an increased risk of heart disease and death.

For 28 years, the researchers examined 84,000 women and 38,000 men. Their data showed that a daily diet consisting of red meat increased the chances of developing heart disease by 14 percent. Consuming red meat on a daily basis also increased the risk of premature death by 13 percent during the 28 year study.

Processed red meats, such as hot dogs and bacon, caused an even larger amount of people to suffer heart conditions. Eighteen percent of individuals who claimed they ate daily servings of processed meats suffered from symptoms of heart disease.

If you suffer from heart disease, please seek medical attention at the Katy emergency care center, Neighbors Emergency Center. To learn more about our services, please contact Neighbors Emergency Center by calling 281-238-7897 today.

Mosquitoes are popping up in the Houston area early this year, thanks to a rainy start to the new year and warm weather.

Houston had its eighth wettest February last month, a stark contrast to the heavy Texas drought at this time last year. The added moisture and slightly warmer temperatures create a welcoming breeding ground for mosquitoes. Fort Bend, Galveston, and Harris Counties are all reporting higher counts of mosquitoes than usual.

While a mosquito bite is itchy and irritating, the pests can also pose certain health risks. West Nile Virus is perhaps the most feared, but luckily the species of mosquitoes that carry the virus have not been found since November and are not among the species appearing in the area. Encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, can also cause serious health risks.

If you or someone you love begins showing symptoms of West Nile Virus or encephalitis, visit the 24-hour Katy emergency care center or call 281-238-7897.

A new study has revealed a link between prescription sleeping pills and premature death and cancer.

Researchers found that even if prescription sleeping pills are not taken often, the risks remain. People who take 18 or fewer sleeping pills a year were found to have more than 3.5 times higher a risk of death compared to people who do not take sleeping pills. Those who take more than 132 sleeping pills a year have five times the risk of death and 35 percent higher risk of cancer.

More than 10,500 people were tracked over a 2.5 year period for the study. Their findings were compared to 23,500 people matched for lifestyle factors, age, sex, and underlying health problems who did not take sleeping pills.

If you have experienced serious side effects with a prescription, visit or call the Sugar Land emergency center at 281-238-7897.

A new study presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2012 reveals that sunlight could lower one’s chances of stroke.

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham studied 16,000 men and women for five years to look at geographical and racial differences in strokes. By asking where they had lived throughout their lives and accounting for factors such as smog and clouds, researchers were able to calculate sunlight exposure.

Analysis of their data showed that the more sunlight exposure one gets, the lower their risk of stroke. Those who live in areas with less than average sunlight exposure were 60 percent more likely to have a stroke.

If you or someone you love ever suffers from a stroke, take them to the 24-hour Katy or Sugar Land medical center or call 281-238-7897 immediately.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Native Americans who eat processed meats, such as Spam, are twice as likely to develop diabetes compared to those who eat little or no processed meats.

Researchers surveyed 2,000 Native Americans across the country who did not have diabetes at the beginning of the study and who often ate processed meats. After five years, 243 people developed diabetes. Of the 500 who ate the most processed meat, 85 developed the disease compared to 44 of the 500 who ate the least processed meats.

The specialists involved with the study did not find a strong connection between diabetes and unprocessed meats. Researchers believe that the sodium levels in processed meats could contribute to the increased risk of developing the disease.

A new study from the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia suggests that narcissism in men could have adverse health effects.

Researchers at the universities found that men with unhealthy narcissism traits have higher levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that could cause high blood pressure and heart problems. Men and women were both studied, however only men were found to have high levels of cortisol.

Three of the five personality components related to narcissism are considered healthy, including leadership, self-admiration, and superiority. Researchers speculate that expectations of masculinity, such as dominance and aggression, could contribute to men’s vulnerabiliy.

In a new study by Columbia University, UC San Francisco and Virginia Tech, the implementation of a soda tax could make Americans healthier.

The proposed soda tax would add a penny to every ounce. The tax is estimated to raise $13 billion a year and decrease medical costs by $17 billion in the reduction of the occurrence of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Researchers’ findings suggest that over a 10 year period, there would be 26,000 fewer premature deaths; 8,000 fewer strokes; and 95,000 fewer instances of coronary heart disease.

Economists believe that a soda tax would deter soft drink consumption by about 15 percent. Currently no state has passed a soda tax.

According to survey conducted by the University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston, Houstonians are far behind the national standards for cancer screenings.

Screenings for breast cancer for Houston women between the ages of 40 and 70 are at 64 percent compared to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Healthy People” goal of 81 percent. Only 58 percent of adults between 50 and 74 are tested for colon cancer, far below the recommended 70.5 percent goal. Similarly, 80 percent of women 21 to 65 are tested for cervical cancer, down from the CDC’s recommendation of 93 percent.

Experts believe the high cost of insurance deters many adults from being screened for cancer, with some tests costing upwards to $1500.
